IBM’s Watson computer is finding new applications in healthcare that could change the way doctors work

While the physician-patient relationship and the doctor’s diagnostic expertise remain primordial, the computer can store enormous amounts of information and never forgets a thing. Advances in artificial intelligence and a dedicated training regime enable Watson to sort through masses of documents and to answer questions, all in something approximating natural language. The system also incorporates data drawn from the Internet of Things. Inputting the doctor’s decisions also helps “educate” Watson. Initial use has been in the realms of cancer and diabetes, with new developments expected this year.
