Henderson Hospital Opens in Las Vegas

Using an Integrated Project Delivery method, Henderson Hospital recently opened in Henderson, Nevada. The integrated team, consisting of owner UHS, the joint venture contractors Turner and SR Construction, HMC Architects and several key trade partners, successfully designed and constructed Henderson Hospital in 27 months, making it one of the fastest hospitals built in the western United States.

Part of the new Union Village—an integrated health village—HMC Architects set out to design, build and operate a Lean, efficient facility that allows for flexibility, productivity and delivery of quality services that improve the patient and family experience to this growing southern Nevada community.

An acute healthcare facility, Henderson Hospital has 214 beds and offers emergency care, women’s services, surgical services and comprehensive care. Patient satisfaction was a key driver in the design and comes to life with private patient rooms and solutions that reduce noise in patient areas and limit the spread of bacteria.

From the onset, the project had ambitious goals, including:

Incorporate Evidence-Based best practice, tried and true features and processes and new technology to improve operations

Speed to market

Zero regulatory deficiencies that would allow opening by Oct. 31

Make a positive impact on and add value to the Greater Valley Health System

Flexibility and modularity to transition IP and OP services and various levels of service

Create new industry standard for Las Vegas area

Together, the integrated project team was able to deliver a patient-focused hospital that brings immense value to the community. Innovative use of both prefabrication and onsite place modular construction contributes to a much faster, error-free construction process. In addition to private patient rooms, patient areas are quiet and calming thanks to smart acoustics design, which would include isolation of the nurse station behind glass walls and a silent nurse call system that uses wireless phones instead of overhead paging. To promote patient healing and reduce the spread of germs, silver ion-infused countertops in patient care areas help reduce bacteria, and antimicrobial coatings on door handles and indigo lighting in the surgery department’s perioperative and recovery spaces assist with eliminating bacteria.

The hospital design was also submitted as an ILPD project in the healthcare category for $25-$100 million and won first place in the Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence in Construction State of Nevada Awards 2016.
