Boston Scientific Launches Sling for Male Stress Urinary Incontinence

The AdVance XP Male Sling System has been redesigned for ease of placement and improved stability, the company noted.

Boston Scientific recently launched its AdVance XP Male Sling System in the United States for male stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The company said the device has been redesigned for ease of placement and improved stability and is available in longer sling lengths to accommodate larger patient anatomy.

The Marlborough, MA-based device maker said it worked with urologists to identify their needs during the product development process. Roughly 500,000 men worldwide suffer from SUI, Boston Scientific said, and about 8,000 to 9,000 male slings are implanted each year to address the condition.

The next-generation device leverages the company's previous platform, with some added features. For example, the new device includes the addition of a chevron anchoring mechanism designed to enhance tissue fixation. The new design also incorporates changes to the mesh weave intended to provide uniform load displacement, and helical-shaped trocars to better support the male patient anatomy.

“I believe the Advance XP Male Sling will allow my patients to get back to their normal, daily activities sooner,” said Brian Christine, MD, director of erectile restoration, prosthetic urology and male genital aesthetic surgery, Urology Centers of Alabama. “The modifications may help reduce post-operative sling slippage and may reduce the restrictions I previously placed on my patients immediately following placement, such as lifting, squatting and sexual activity.”
