GOING PAPERLESS: HOW ONTARIO SHORES BROKE THE MOLD

Canadian Hospital Moved Away From Paper Records and Improved Service and Care for Patients

Several years ago, the management team at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) made a decision to completely switch over to a paperless medical records system, with the intention of improving patient care and safety. Their mission has been an enormous success. In 2014, the facility became the first mental health hospital in the world to receive a Stage VII award from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS, in recognition of its achievements in eliminating paper files and streamlining its records system. The team at Ontario Shores achieved this by replacing a mish mash of software spread across various services with one single integrated system.

The paperless approach has led to improvements in patient diagnosis and treatment as well as a reduction in prescription errors. It also allows for better data collation which can then be used to analyse systems and practices, and even as a method for providing instant feedback on quality improvement initiatives.
