STUDY: TELEMONITORING CUTS READMISSIONS BY UP TO 44 PERCENT

Four Year Study Shows Telemonitoring Cuts Heart Failure Readmissions

A study carried out on data from the Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) based in the Pennsylvania hospital system, showed that remote monitoring on heart failure patients can reduce the number of readmissions by 38 to 44 percent. Researchers examined the health data of patients enrolled in the GHP over a four year period, beginning in 2008 and concluding in 2012. The study involved 541 patients who used a Bluetooth-connected weighing scales supplied by AMC Health, that included interactive voice surveys covering shortness of breath, swelling and medication management among other parameters.

According to the study, “Remote monitoring of heart failure patients may offer an efficient means to manage patients without the need for face-to-face contact, increasing access to care as needed, especially when warning signs of an impending exacerbation of the patient’s condition emerge.” The study is due to appear in December in the journal Population Health Management.
