6SENSORLABS RECEIVES $4M TO CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT OF GLUTEN SENSOR

Device Detects Gluten Up To Ten Times Faster Than Existing Tests

Gluten intolerance continues to be a hot topic as awareness of the condition increases among the general public. Alternative food products such as gluten-free cereals, drinks, pizzas and desserts have become big business. At the same time there is some movement in the medical devices industry. 6SensorLabs, a tech start-up are developing a device that can detect the presence of gluten in foodstuffs, and also share this information via smartphone. The company’s sensing technology can detect gluten up to ten times faster than current tests. But, in the future the same technology platform could be used to identify a multitude of toxins hidden in foodstuffs. Which could be of great help to consumers who are very sensitive to nuts, lactose etc., it could allow them to feel more in control of what they eat and less likely to fall ill. During a recent round of fresh investment 6SensorLabs received US$4 million, which is a positive sign for the development of its first product, known as the Canary sensor. The funding round involved investors such as SK Ventures, Xandex Investments and Kapor Capital and was led by Upfront Ventures.
