CYBER-ATTACK HIGHLIGHTS DANGERS OF ONLINE DATA STORAGE

Data-breach Threat to Bluetooth Enabled Devices and Cloud Storage

A major hospital group in the US recently fell victim to a major cyber-hack that impacted the lives of millions of its patients. The massive cyber-attack hit Community Health Systems in April and June of this year and resulted in the theft of 4.5 million people’s personal data. This data included names and addresses, social security numbers and birthdates and was a major breach of security for the health group which runs 206 hospitals in 29 states.

This latest example of personal records being stolen serves to show the risks associated with online data storage. The increase in wi-fi/bluetooth connected medical devices creates its own risks. Cloud-based storage of sensitive information is fast becoming the norm for many hospital and clinics. Security experts have called for medical providers to tighten up their security measures and remain vigilant at all times.
