SPRAY-ON, BIODEGRADABLE SEAL FOR SURGICAL INCISIONS

Biomedical engineers use nanofibers and airbrush for new surgical application of biopolymers

Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a new kind of surgical glue using biodegradable, polymer nanofibers, which are literally sprayed onto skin, creating a mat-like seal over surgical incisions. The use of such mats has up to now been impossible as other methods for application cause damage to living tissues.

With a common airbrush and CO2, researchers apply a mixture of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) an acetone solvent, by simply spraying the material onto a surface, creating a solid mat.
