CRUTCHES GET AN UPDATE

A redesign of classic crutches offer comfort and indepedence

Crutches have not seen much transformation over the years, but designer Behzad Rashidizadeh would like to change that. He has proposed a design for a what amounts to a medical third leg. Basically, the injured leg, ankle or foot is immobilized and bound to the Sit & Stand assisted walking system. The patient’s thigh gets strapped onto a supportive pad, allowing the patient to walk forward without strain to their injury or to their arms.

The idea to create a lightweight and ergonomic alternative to crutches inspired this concept. Is the world ready for arm-free crutches? That remains to be seen, but it is certainly refreshing to see a new spin on a medical device much in need of redesign.
