LOW-COST LED SURGICAL LIGHT

An interesting alternative source of light for developing nations

Michael O’Brien, from Sydney’s University of Technology, was alarmed by a recurrent issue encountered by medical staff in developing countries: performing medical surgeries without electricity. During the competition organised by India Future of Change, he presented a low-cost surgical LED light, meant to work when power is lacking, thanks to a rechargeable 12-volt battery mounted in a sheet-metal frame. Michael O’Brien, aware of the budget difficulties the potential users have to face, not only focused on creating a particularly handy light but also on delivering it to them in the cheapest way possible. The whole industrial process was thought through with this criteria in mind (single frame metal protection, making it a very cheap production process at scale, easy to install by hand).
