Clinical utility of ultrasound in the delivery room: workshop in Lecce

Study and training day, organized by the CNR of the Salento capital and by the University of Parma in exclusive partnership with Amolab, using the SenUS Touch device, after the course in the Emilian city

Workshop on the clinical utility of ultrasound in the delivery room: on 8 July 2022 in Lecce the theoretical-practical study day was held on how to perform the examination in such a way as to be able to monitor all stages of labor reliably , automatic, non-invasive and safe, for both mother and child.

The initiative was organized by the CNR-IFC of Lecce and the Universities of Parma and Tor Vergata of Rome, in exclusive partnership with Amolab, making use of the innovative SenUS Touch ultrasound device, as already done on 25 February in the city Emilian.

The course, accredited with the recognition of 6 ECM credits, was taught by prof. Tullio Ghi, full professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Parma and director of the Complex Unit of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University of Parma. Prof. Giuseppe Rizzo, full professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome, prof. Andrea Dall'Asta, associate of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University of Parma and dr. Marco Di Paola, head of clinical studies of the CNR-IFC of Lecce.

The theoretical part was dedicated to the clinical use of intrapartum ultrasound, highlighting the crucial role of ultrasound examination in the diagnosis of the position and position of the fetus. The practical part allowed exercises on phantoms and simulators, with particular attention to transperineal ultrasound, recognition of the position of the occiput, manual measurement of the angle of progression and the use of automatic approaches to determine the progression of the fetus.

"SensUS Touch is a very useful device for the management of labor because it allows the objective measurement of some parameters related to the progression of the fetal head in the birth canal", explained prof. Tullio Ghi. “In our clinical practice, the use of SensUS is aimed at understanding how labor should be managed in patients who have difficulty progressing,” he added. "The device provides automatic and reproducible measurements that allow medical and obstetric staff to decide when and how to intervene, i.e. if the conditions are such as to allow an operative vaginal delivery or when it is necessary to perform a caesarean section", said the university professor. .

" The use of SensUS allows to have objective measurements through the angle of progression and the head-perineal distance which allow us to report the level of the fetal position in an absolute way", underlined prof. Rizzo.

The next workshop on the clinical utility of ultrasound in the delivery room is expected in Rome and is scheduled for November 25, 2022, according to the formula successfully tested in Parma and Lecce.
