Multi-Camera Tracking for Precision Orthopedic Navigation

With 0.12 mm RMS positioning accuracy and a 120 Hz sampling rate, RUITONG PRO supports an integrated workflow spanning tracking, registration, reconstruction, and collision avoidance. Its multi-camera architecture enables simultaneous instrument tracking across an expanded surgical workspace.
Conventional optical navigation systems typically rely on a single stereo camera unit. Their limited line of sight can be obstructed by surgical staff, instruments, or sterile drapes, interrupting tracking and disrupting workflow. These challenges become particularly significant when multiple instruments are used together.
01 | Beyond a Single View: Coordinated Tracking Across a Wider Workspace
RUITONG PRO addresses these limitations through a coordinated multi-camera tracking architecture. Within a working range of 950–2,400 mm, it can simultaneously track 25 tools and 200 markers, capturing six-degree-of-freedom pose data at 120 Hz.
Combining stereo vision with infrared sensing, the system uses triangulation to locate tracked targets within a shared coordinate system. Multiple viewpoints expand tracking coverage and provide redundancy, reducing the risk of tracking loss due to occlusion.
This architecture supports concurrent tracking of patient reference frames and surgical instruments across the larger workspaces required for pelvic, spinal, and joint procedures.

Where lower sampling rates can produce lag or discontinuities during rapid instrument movement, its 120 Hz operation supports smooth, responsive tracking.
When switching between registered instruments, the system maintains their spatial relationship to the patient’s anatomy without requiring repeat calibration, helping teams move more efficiently between surgical tasks.

Effective multi-camera tracking depends on a unified coordinate system.
RUITONG PRO supports rapid spatial calibration, calculating the relative positions and orientations of the cameras and aligning their coordinate systems. This streamlines setup and reduces preoperative configuration time, helping surgical teams integrate multi-camera navigation into demanding operating room workflows.
04 | Bringing AR into the Navigation Workflow
RUITONG PRO also supports augmented reality navigation.
By tracking optical markers attached to an AR headset, the system incorporates the headset’s position and orientation into the same coordinate system used for surgical navigation.
This external tracking helps compensate for drift in the headset’s own localization, improving alignment between virtual overlays and patient anatomy and supporting more reliable AR-assisted visualization.
