Frozen fat dissolving: A Breakthrough from popsicles to Fat Loss

The invention of Cryolipolysis, in part, originated from an accidental discovery made by children while they were eating popsicles. Researchers have noticed that when popsicles are stuck to the cheeks for a long time, it can cause local fat necrosis, but the skin remains undamaged. This phenomenon is called "cold-induced fat necrosis", indicating that fat is more sensitive to low temperatures.

In 2007, scientists tested cooling devices on pigs and successfully selectively destroyed fat cells without damaging the skin. In 2010, the first cryolipolysis technology, CoolSculpting, was approved for eliminating fat around the waist. Subsequently, it was extended to multiple areas including the thighs, abdomen, and chin.

The principle might be that the fat cells after freezing gradually die and are broken down and cleared by immune cells (macrophages) within a few months, thereby achieving local fat reduction.
