A Few Things to Know About Spider Veins
What are the potential complications of untreated spider veins?
While spider veins are often considered a cosmetic issue, they can develop into more serious health risks if left untreated. In some cases, spider veins can gradually develop into more extensive and severe varicose veins, causing leg swelling, pain, and persistent discomfort.
As the condition progresses, patients may develop chronic venous insufficiency, which impairs normal blood circulation and causes a series of skin changes, such as:
Localized skin hyperpigmentation, resulting in dark spots or discoloration
Thickening of the skin, forming lipodermatosclerosis
Persistent itching and irritation
In severe cases, long-term untreated venous problems can even lead to venous ulcers—open wounds on the skin that are difficult to heal and can become infected if not properly cared for.
Although rare, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is another complication to be aware of. DVT involves a blood clot in the deep veins, which, if left undiagnosed and treated, can lead to life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
It should be noted that not all spider veins lead to the aforementioned complications. However, early professional evaluation and timely treatment are key steps to block the progression of the disease and prevent serious consequences.
