Thermal Ablation Treatments for Oncology by Biomedical

MWA is a minimally invasive surgical treatment option for many type of cancers. Ablative procedures can be performed at open surgery, laparoscopically or percutaneously. During treatment, microwaves are applied directly to tissues to produce rapid temperature elevations sufficient to produce immediate coagulative necrosis.

This result is achieved through the use of TATOpro applicators, which are very thin needles from whose tips microwaves are spread. The wide range of TATOpro''s sizes makes them suitable for every kind of procedure: our customers can choose between 11G up to 18G applicators, depending on the setting and on the organ that needs to be treated.

Several energy sources are currently used for thermal ablation, the two most commonly used are radiofrequency electrical current and microwaves. Differently from what happens with traditional radiofrequency systems, microwaves heat cells homogenously without being influenced neither by tissue nor by the presence of a near blood vessel. This means that interventional radiologists are able to estimate the ablation outcome and, as a result, to plan their operation with high precision and accuracy.

The strengths of TATO system lie in:

- The feasibility to fight cancer in day hospital through a minimally invasive procedure even on frail patients, thus representing an alternative to surgical removal of the tumor.

- The possibility to use multiple applicators at the same time and to distribute the power among up to four applicators thanks to the switch unit.

- TATOpro is the applicator for thermal ablation that does not overheat and therefore works safely without the need of a cooling system.

- The chance to treat cancer even on rather small organs, such as prostate and thyroid, by using our 18G applicator, which is the thinnest needle available in the TATOpro Gauge range.

- Synergic cancer treatment by matching chemotherapy drug injection with microwave heating of the tumor cells.

- The feasibility to place TATOpro applicators under CT scan thanks to a detachable power cable.

- Its energy efficiency, which allows treating a big lesion by using small levels of power.

- Easy configuration of the system through a user-friendly touchscreen interface.
