Ultrasonic Oxygen Sensor for Medical Applications

Fast response, long lifespan, no need of routine calibration

What is ultrasonic oxygen sensor?

An oxygen sensor is an electronic device that measures the proportion of oxygen (O2) in the gas or liquid being analysed. Oxygen sensors are used in oxygen analyzers which find a lot of use in medical applications such as anesthesia monitors, respirators and oxygen concentrators.

Ultrasonic oxygen sensor uses the ultrasonic velocity difference between upstream and downstream to detect the gas flow and also the oxygen purity for oxygen concentrator.

And the biggest advantage of ultrasonic technology is no need of routine calibration and long life span.

Principle of ultrasonic technology

Ultrasonic flow detection theory: When the ultrasonic wave transmits in the fluid, it will carry flow velocity under the influence of fluid velocity. Fluid velocity can be measured by detecting the received ultrasonic signal to obtain the fluid flow rate.

The feature of ultrasonic flow measurement is no obstructing fluid flow, etc.

Ultrasonic concentration detection theory: when the binary gas mixture composition has molecular weight difference, sound travel speed varies from different gas composition.

Medical ventilator

A medical ventilator (or simply ventilator in context) is a mechanical ventilator, a machine designed to move breathable air into and out of the lungs, to provide breathing for a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently.

PSA oxygen concentrator

A PSA oxygen concentrator is a device which concentrates the oxygen from a gas supply (typically ambient air) to supply an oxygen-enriched gas stream. It adopts PSA technology to separate the O2 and N2 in air to proceed continuous O2 supply.

It has been widely used in personal and medical treatment for oxygen supply. During the oxygen supply, PSA oxygen concentrator needs oxygen sensor to detect the concentration and flow range.

PSA technology is a reliable and economical technique for small to mid-scale oxygen generation, with cryogenic separation more suitable at higher volumes and external delivery generally more suitable for small volumes.

Normally, the purity of oxygen concentrator is less than 95%, because during the air separation, there is also gas like Ar, CO2 apart from O2 and N2. It is different from oxygen cylinder and has no 100% pure oxygen environment.

Anesthetic machine

The anesthetic machine is a set of instruments and devices used in anesthesiology, primarily for supporting anesthesia administration to the patients. The most common type of anesthetic machine use is the continuous-flow anesthetic machine, which is designed to provide an accurate and continuous supply of medical gases (such as oxygen O2 and nitrousoxide N2), mixed with an accurate concentration of anesthetic vapour, and deliver this to the patient at a safe pressure and flow. Modern machines incorporate a ventilator, suction unit, and patient monitoring devices.
