DW-M9: Precision Ultrasound for Needle-Guided Procedures
The ultimate ultrasound for precise, needle-guided interventions
Ultrasound Needle Guided Procedures
Ultrasound, or sonography, is commonly used in noninvasive procedures to precisely guide needles and instruments. Radiologists rely on ultrasound to identify and assess fluid collections in tendons, muscles, cysts, and soft-tissue masses, enabling them to:
Accurately extract fluid
Guide biopsies with precision
Drain cysts and abscesses
Address some types of tendinitis
Types of Common Ultrasound-Guided Procedures
Thoracentesis
This procedure extracts fluid from the pleural space—the area between the lungs' outer lining and the chest wall. Following a local anesthetic injection, a needle is inserted just above a rib to withdraw fluid, which may then be sent to a lab for testing.
Paracentesis
Paracentesis involves inserting a needle into the abdominal cavity to obtain fluid samples. After preparing the puncture site, an anesthetic is administered. The needle is carefully inserted into the abdomen, sometimes aided by a small incision, allowing fluid to be withdrawn and the site dressed as needed.
Biopsy
Ultrasound-guided biopsies offer a minimally invasive way to assess abnormal tissue. The ultrasound helps locate the mass, and a core needle removes a small tissue sample for examination. You may lie on your back or slightly turned while a numbing agent is applied before the needle, guided by ultrasound, extracts several samples.
