LYNX DYNAMO: David Utrera’s Experience

Interview with a specialist in the field of strength and his experience with Lynx DYNAMO

After offering solutions to biomechanics, rehabilitation doctors, physiotherapists and legal experts in the field of articular measurements with our medical device for movement analysis– LYNX, we observed these professionals required to obtain force measurements in a simple, fast and cost-effective way. After months of research and development, we launched a new module for Lynx dedicated to strength measurement: DYNAMO.

Lynx DYNAMO is a portable, simple and accurate solution. It consists of a small case that includes a USB drive to install the software and a sensor with a ring that measures tensile forces up to 100 kg. In addition, the case incorporates a mounting system for doors and rigid straps of different sizes as well as a padded foam that allows force measurements to be taken as comfortably and accurately as possible.

The Dynamo software is easy and quick to use and includes multiple functionalities:

Visualisation and analysis of strength in real-time

Comparative evaluation of different tests and muscle groups.

Monitoring of the patient’s progress

Creation of custom measurement protocols

Automatic report generation

Integration into daily clinical practice thanks to real-time biofeedback

David Utrera is a graduate in Physical Education and Physiotherapy with a Master’s degree in Sports Physiotherapy and specialises in strength analysis in the rehabilitation process. David spotted DyCare when he was researching different physiotherapy programmes and platforms. He immediately contacted us and found the solution he was looking for. Below, David details his experience with LYNX.

David, tell us briefly about your professional career.

I worked in several rehabilitation centres in France and Spain before joining professional football. I was lucky enough to work in France, Spain, Russia and Qatar in 3 different positions: Physiotherapist, Recovery physiotherapist and Physical Trainer.

I arrived in Qatar in 2012 from UD Almeria to work at Aspire Academy. I was in charge of the Strength programme for almost 5 years. Currently, I am the Strength coordinator in the Rehabilitation department of the Aspetar sports hospital.

“Now, we can clearly show the patient the evolution of his treatment”

Why is it important to measure the strength in the planning of a rehabilitation treatment?

Well, in my case, it is the main part of my work. Strength ensures function, mobility, etc., and movement is life. We need objective data to quantify the patient’s progress. Lynx DYNAMO allows us to know the magnitude of the force exerted by the patient in real-time, with the additional feedback that allows the patient to self-regulate the force using the data on the screen. We can set plans very precisely for the patient, guaranteeing an optimal load to achieve the expected progress.

Do you think it’s critical to get accurate data at every stage of the recovery process?

Absolutely. Firstly, because we need objective data that quantifies the patient’s progress. This way we can make sure that we provide the best treatment, which is important for my own tranquillity and reassurance. Secondly, because it allows us to explain and show the evolution of their process, either in the same session with the feedback on the screen, or as time passes with the data provided by the software. This benefits the patient in terms of motivation and allows us to precisely adjust the loads for optimal recovery.

“DYNAMO provides us with information regarding the maximum daily strength of the patient with a simple click”

What are the advantages?

DYNAMO is very easy to use and quantifies strength accurately. For years, we only had limited information such as the sets, repetitions and kilos that the patient performed as tools to estimate the strength of a patient. It was difficult to know if the load was adequate: if we used too little load, the muscles were not sufficiently stimulated and using too much load could result in an injury. In short, both cases could affect the results of the rehabilitation process. Using the dynamometer enables accurate measurement of a patient’s daily strength and ensures a higher adherence rate in terms of the percentage of maximum strength to be performed. It provides us with objective data that ensure that we apply the appropriate load as we progress in each session.

Should such solution be customisable?

Yes, because each patient is different, and I would say that the same patient is different every day. DYNAMO allows us to know your maximum daily strength with a simple test, and from there, apply the programmed percentage.

What would you improve about the DYNAMO module?

It would be ideal if it was able to measure the joint angle, either to perform the tests in the same position (isometric) or to make sure that the patient moves the joint in the allowed/optimal range (isotonic).

“It is essential to make an objective analysis of the patient’s progress”

Any further comments?

I am very happy with DyCare solutions! In a rehabilitation process, it is very useful to evaluate the patient’s progression. Most of the time, this progression is subjective. With Lynx, however, it is possible to see how the test results have changed over time and thus make an objective analysis. I recommend it to all physiotherapists and rehabilitation professionals who need a tool to improve patient diagnosis and treatment.
