Why is hydrogen peroxide disinfection the first choice to control the spread of novel coronavirus?

Hydrogen Peroxide is a commonly used disinfectant, which is widely used in medical and health, food processing and other industries. Its working principle is that hydrogen peroxide attacks cell membrane lipids, DNA and other necessary cell components by generating destructive hydroxyl radicals. Hydrogen peroxide can act on a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast, fungi, viruses and spores.

0.5% hydrogen peroxide showed bactericidal and virucidal effects within 1 minute, and bactericidal and fungicidal effects within 5 minutes. When using quantitative carrier test, 7% stable hydrogen peroxide proved to be effective against virus (exposure for 5 minutes).

The traditional method of using hydrogen peroxide is to disinfect the equipment and surface of the ward by hand cleaning and wiping. This method is time-consuming, inefficient and incomplete, and it also poses a threat to the medical staff who are constantly exposed to the ward.

After nearly 20 years of development, hydrogen peroxide sterilizers have been widely used in hospitals, pharmaceutical factories, research institutions, biosafety laboratories .

Vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) technology generates hydrogen peroxide vapor by flashing liquid hydrogen peroxide. Gaseous hydrogen peroxide has stronger germicidal efficacy than liquid hydrogen peroxide, and quickly spreads to the air and surface for disinfection. It is a new type of disinfection technology without personnel contact and full automation.

The earliest case of using vaporized hydrogen peroxide technology to deal with emergency public health events was that when the US government department was attacked by anthrax in 2001, the federal government adopted several vaporized hydrogen peroxide equipment to disinfect buildings.

With regard to the application of vaporized hydrogen peroxide against coronavirus, it has been reported that as early as 2003, when severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) broke out in Singapore, a hydrogen peroxide vaporizing device was deployed in many hospitals in Singapore, through which hydrogen peroxide was vaporized, so as to realize rapid and comprehensive diffusion of hydrogen peroxide on ward walls, floors, equipment, tables and chairs, and complete disinfection.

Later, there were similar applications in the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and H7N9 avian influenza virus.
