OXYGEN FOR ZAMBIAN HOSPITAL

ST FRANCIS HOSPITAL RECEIVES OXYGEN GENERATOR FOR VENTILATING PATIENTS

St Francis Hospital is a Church Administered Hospital in the Katete District in Zambia. It serves the medical needs of the local population of over 200,000 people. In the operating theatres over 3000 operations are performed annually. The oxygen for ventilating patients will soon be produced by an INMATEC oxygen generator donated by the Friends of St. Francis Katete Charitable Trust.

As a teaching hospital the St Francis Hospital not only provides treatment to the most vulnerable in society but also provides training and medical education for future health professionals. The hospital is funded by the Zambian government as well as a number of churches and support groups. One of them is the Friends of St. Francis Katete Charitable Trust from UK. The organisation raises funds to cover the cost of equipment and staff from overseas. Due to the lack of a sufficient supply chain for oxygen in Katete, an oxygen generator was now donated by the group.

The POC 8200 oxygen generator just left the plant in Germany and will produce oxygen onsite in the hospital. The ambient air is filtered by a zeolite molecular sieve, separating the oxygen molecules from the nitrogen molecules. The oxygen has a purity of up to 95% and is generated in capacities of up to 14 m3 per hour. Stored in a product tank the oxygen can now be used in the various wards of the hospital.

There are 480 patient beds divided into adult medical and paediatric, maternity and surgical wards as well as a basic Special Care Baby Unit. In the four operating theatres all planned operations and emergency operations are performed, over 3000 each year. About 400 medical professionals and employees take care of over 22,000 admissions per year. Another 93,000 people are treated in the outpatient department annually.

“Our aim is to provide medical care and training to improve the lives of Zambians. We are glad that with the generator we can provide a device that improves the health and welfare of the patients in Katete”, says Andrew Cairns, Hon Treasurer of the Friends of St. Francis Katete Charitable Trust.
