Laminar Flow Equipment: Individual Approach

Lamsystems specialists assisted their customer in solving one more specialized problem by designing customized equipment.

Our customers often require non-standard technical solutions that could maintain or enhance their operation. By approaching such tasks, the specialists of Lamsystems gained a lot of experience in customized design. Quite a few of non-standard products developed mutually with customers become serial subsequently. However, some of narrow specialized products solve specific problems remaining one of kind.

The customer contacted us with the following problem. A Class 7 room with Class II biosafety cabinets inside required a clean zone of a higher cleanliness class to ensure sterile transfer of objects and materials between the cabinets. The task was complicated by small dimensions of the room and low ceiling that significantly reduced the number of possible solutions.

Upon studying possible options, the specialists of Lamsystems proposed to insert a Class 5 clean zone between the biosafety cabinets. Filtered laminar air flow of the clean zone would have ensured sterile work area and protection from cross-contamination. In order to guarantee the results to the customer and to make sure the simultaneously operating Class II biosafety cabinets do not impact the consistency of the air downflow in the clean zone, our specialists assembled the two Class II biosafety cabinets and the clean zone at our assembly workshop. Then, using a smoke generator, they visualized the airflows (see the video).

The laminar flow visualization demonstrated that operating cabinets do not disturb the air downflow and, thus, do not impact the protection efficiency of the clean zone. As a result, sterile air environment for transfer of the objects and materials from one cabinet to another was ensured.
