Paint Pigments & Coatings: Advanced Solutions in Material Characterization for the Modern Laboratory

Live Webinar June 9th, 2020

A wide variety of materials with very different properties are utilized in the field of paints and coatings. Among these are pigments for use in both wet and dry paint applications, where size and shape govern the optical properties from opacity (e.g. titanium dioxide), to flip/flop for metallic and mica materials. In dry systems (powder coatings) powder flow is key and this is governed by particle size distribution and shape, as well as chemistry. Obviously, color, gloss, and weathering properties are affected by similar properties too. The stability in relation to sedimentation is governed by zeta potential and rheological properties which are often interdependent. Purity of chemical phases and elemental composition can be assessed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence respectively. In this webinar we’ll look at a wide range of characterization tools based on the application and desired utilization of the materials. We’ll even be able to have a very brief look at applications of NIR spectroscopy to works of art.
