COVID-19, a Multidisciplinary Challenge

Healthcare personnel who is not specialists in Emergency or Intensive Care have been called to the front line. These workers must be trained as quickly, effectively, and safely as possible.

More than a year has passed, and the COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the routine of health professionals within hospitals around the world, pushing them to their limits.

Fortunately, most patients have mild to moderate symptoms, but those with a severe COVID-19 infection remain a challenge to the healthcare team that assists them1,2,3. With healthcare professionals specialized in so many different areas, it is no surprise that many of them are not prepared to provide the complex and specific care that a high-risk patient demands.

In response to COVID-19, hospitals call doctors, nurses, paramedics, and physiotherapists who are not specialists in Emergency or Intensive Care to the front line. These workers must be trained as quickly, effectively, and safely as possible.

Even professionals used to the daily routine of critically ill patients and invasive procedures find it challenging to take care of coronavirus patients due to the extra concern of contamination and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment4.

The COVID-19 crisis has taken all health workers out of their comfort zones, and there is no alternative but to adapt to this new reality.

In these troubled times, we can and should use technology to our advantage. Simulators and high-fidelity manikins are tools for practicing skills, correcting mistakes, and experiencing emergency scenarios in a stressful and contaminated environment, individually and as a team.
