Why suprapubic catheterisation? Why The Mediplus S-Cath System?

Suprapubic Catheterisation (SPC) is an alternative catheterisation technique offered should a patient present symptoms of the bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and where urethral catheterisation be unsuccessful or undesirable. It is also electively indicated in patients unable to tolerate long-term urethral catheterisation due to bladder spasm/discomfort/bypassing, and in patients with neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and spina bifida.

BAUS has created guidance and recognises SPC as an important tool in urological practice.

Conventional SPC insertion kits with a trochar can be a daunting procedure for the user as well as the patient.

There are a number of dedicated SPC kits available, and now with modified Trochar Systems that utilise the Seldinger Technique.

The Seldinger Technique allows controlled entry of the trochar into the bladder over a guidewire and is designed to reduce the potential hazards of the blind technique. BAUS have recognised the Mediplus S-Cath System as THE SPC kit with Seldinger Technique (Gulur DM, Housami F, Drake MJ. Suprapubic catheterisation insertion using Seldinger technique, with the Mediplus SPC kit).

The Mediplus guidewire is key to the success of this techinique. The 3 stage guidewire improves and guarantees insertion of the trochar along the anaesthetised track into position without damaging the posterial wall of the bladder.

At Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, UK the adoption of the Mediplus S-Cath System has allowed SPC to be carried out in an outpatient setting. This has vastly reduced the need for general anaesthetic and duration of stay in hospital. This as well as a number of other studies has lead to the Mediplus S-Cath System being selected by the NHS Technology Adoption Centre and their recommendation as THE go to SPC tool.
