New study confirms: 13.6 °C skin temperature is the key to effective cryotherapy
Skin temperature requirements for effective cryotherapy
A recent publication in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Nov 2024) by Hela Jdidi, Claire de Bisschop, Benoît Dugué and colleagues confirms: 13.6 °C skin temperature is the scientifically relevant threshold for effective whole-body cryotherapy applications.
In the study with 30 participants in a modern whole-body cryochamber, the results showed:
Normal-weight participants reached the target skin temperature after 4 minutes.
Overweight participants needed only 3 minutes 30 seconds.
The difference is directly related to body fat percentage (BMI) – the higher it is, the faster the skin cools down to the therapeutic value.
-> These findings highlight why personalized cryotherapy protocols are essential. Instead of relying on fixed session times, monitoring skin temperature allows for optimal dosing – ensuring maximum effectiveness while maintaining the highest level of safety.
For athletes, physiotherapy practices, longevity and wellness centers, this means: those who use the POWERCAB® cryochamber benefit from state-of-the-art technology that allows precise settings. This ensures optimal outcomes such as reduced inflammation, faster recovery, and enhanced performance.
