An innovative approach for a safe, high quality treatment with a cost reduction of 26%.
The use of Toul Operio mobile allowed the safe performance of 3838 IVT in an outpatient setting, during the first period of COVID-19 (March - July 2020) and significantly reduced the waiting time for the first visit. This results in a faster intervention, without modifying the IVT technical procedure which has remained unchanged when comparing the two settings.
In particular, we observed a 26% reduction in operating costs for each IVT performed in the clinic, which translates into a greater impact when considering the total number of IVIs performed in a year.
Only one patient developed endophthalmitis for IVT in an outpatient setting and the reported complication rate was low (0.0465%).
Our results show several advantages regarding the use of laminar flow, mainly a reduction in the waiting time required to perform IVT. Although IVT is a procedure already performed in the office in several countries, in Italy and Southern Europe IVTs are still preferably performed in the operating room. In particular, IVTs performed outside operating theaters did not increase the rate of infections.
In fact, a review published in 2019 showed that the rate of endophthalmitis that occurs after IVTs performed in the office and in the operating room did not differ (0.027% for each), suggesting that it is safe to perform this procedure in both conditions. Our experience confirms this as we have recorded a similar infection rate with the use of mobile laminar flow.
