The Feel Again

Modern prosthetic devices offer new capabilities, including the sense of touch

While traditional models are controlled via cables and harnesses, newer myoelectric versions use electrical signals from muscles attached to the prosthesis. Bebionic’s new hand, sized for smaller individuals, provides 14 pre-programmed grips in response to arm muscle contractions. Experienced users can type, peel vegetables and dress themselves. DARPA researchers have gone a step beyond—a robotic arm the user can feel, thanks to electrodes in the brain. In Japan, Exiii’s HACKberry limb with infrared muscle sensors should reduce costs through 3D printing of parts and open source cooperation fueling further development.
