Prosthetics are expensive, usually well beyond the means of the estimated 100 million people worldwide who need one

But 3-D printing is lowering costs dramatically. This is particularly important for children, who outgrow their artificial limbs every few months. The Bionic Glove Project can provide a series of affordable prostheses to growing kids until they are ready for a more expensive adult device. The company likens their creations to training wheels. Open-source files from the e-NABLE community of volunteers have contributed to such developments. Cyborg Beast is another beneficiary. They can supply artificial hands for as little as $50 US.
