The Growing Wave of Rapid Tests
Rapid disease screening, first developed in the 1960s, is becoming more accurate, easier to use and ever more common
Such tests are especially important in poor areas with limited access to health care services. The recent explosion in rapid testing has been driven largely by HIV and malaria. While pregnancy testing was an early beneficiary, there are now rapid Zika virus tests. As the technology improves, the advantages of such screening will be extended to other diseases. In most cases, positive results must be confirmed by standard procedures, though rapid HIV testing is reliable enough to justify treatment for the disease.
