Skin, soft tissue antibiotic gets FDA green light

The agency has approved Marboquin, the first generic form of marbofloxacin

The generic form of an antibiotic used to treat susceptible infections in dogs and cats has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Marboquin, originally approved as Zeniquin, contains the active pharmaceutical ingredient marbofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including those in the bladder, kidneys, prostate, and skin. It is available in tablet form.

“Fluoroquinolones are considered medically important antimicrobials in human medicine,” FDA says. “Marboquin, like Zeniquin, is available only by prescription because a veterinarian’s expertise is necessary to determine whether treatment with marbofloxacin is appropriate.”

FDA granted the approval of Marboquin to Dechra Veterinary Products, LLC, of Overland Park, Kan.
