Moscow converts Krylatskoe Ice Palace into Covid-19 hospital

Moscow, the capital of Russia, has converted the Krylatskoe Ice Palace into a temporary hospital as the country’s Covid-19 cases increased.

As on 16 November, the country registered a record 22,778 new daily cases of Covid-19.

The new hospital, which was opened last month, will handle the influx of Covid-19 patients.

The Krylatskoe Ice Palace, which was earlier known for hosting international speed skating competitions, is currently on the frontline after its conversion into a hospital.

The former ice rink’s 400m speed skating track now features 1,300 hospital beds that are equipped with oxygen tanks. It also has more than 100 doctors and nurses.

Chief Doctor Andrei Shkoda was quoted by Reuters as saying: “Only its design differentiates it from a regular hospital.

“We prepared very well, which wasn’t the case in the spring (at the start of the pandemic). Since then, we have prepared clinical protocols, gained experience in the fight against the coronavirus…”

The temporary hospital, which is currently providing treatment to around 600 people, has all necessary equipment in place including a CT scanner to treat and diagnose the disease.

In order to relieve strain on its medical system, Russia has started unveiling temporary clinics as well as re-purposing hospitals.

On a daily basis, 60 to 80 new patients are being admitted in the hospital and released.

Since the start of the pandemic, Russia reported 1,948,603 infections and has the fifth largest number of cases globally behind the US, India, Brazil and France.

In April this year, Moscow opened a new 800-bed hospital in Demikhov city to cater to the increasing patients infected with Covid-19.
