New Adhesive Solves Medical Device Assembly Challenges

The Dymax MD 1045-M adhesive is formulated to eliminate challenges associated with needle orientation, material overflow, and long cure times.

Dymax introduced this week a new adhesive in its MD portfolio of light-curable materials for medical device assembly.

The 1045-M adhesive is designed to bond the glass, stainless steel, ABS, and PC substrates used to assemble prefilled syringes, single-use devices, and auto, pen, and wearable injectors. The material is formulated to eliminate challenges associated with needle orientation, material overflow, and the long cure times of other technologies, said Dymax.

The adhesive exhibits very low extractables, according to Dymax. It has passed ISO 10993 cytotoxicity testing and meets essential biocompatibility standards for medical device applications. It is designed to help manufacturers increase productivity, reduce processing times, and exceed critical pull force and quality requirements, said the company.

One-part, solvent-free Dymax MD 1045-M is described as an eco-friendly alternative to solvent-based adhesives. In addition, the product's low 475 centipoise viscosity flows easily onto components in 10 seconds compared with current 30 second or more standard processing times. The material also cures tack-free via exposure to ultraviolet/broad spectrum light and is LED-curable at 365 nm in five seconds.

The low-shrinkage adhesive exhibits a glass-like cure surface, resists yellowing, and withstands autoclave cleaning and gamma and EtO sterilization methods.

Dymax develops rapid and light-curable materials, dispense equipment, and UV/LED light-curing systems for the aerospace and defense, medical device, consumer, and automotive electronics markets.
