MHEALTH: MOBILEOCT BRINGS CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING

High specificity, high sensitivity readings for early-detection of cervical cancer

MobileOCT is an Israeli start-up bringing affordable cervical cancer screening to the developing world with a smart-phone based device. 80% of worldwide cervical cancer cases stem from developing nations as a direct result of limited access to screening; MobileOCT aims to make screening safer, more accessible, and more accurate, in turn reducing cervical cancer’s prevalence.

Multimodal imaging adaptor

The device is one part hardware, one part algorithm; a lens anchors onto a smartphone connected to the internet and absorbs light reflected from the tissue in question. MobileOCT’s algorithms then analyze the light to provide doctors with high specificity, high sensitivity readings on epithelial tissue. Not only will the device provide access to screening in low-resource settings, but the high specificity readings should reduce the number of avoidable biopsies, further diminishing health risks.

The inexpensive, mobile, and quick MobileOCT scope is expected to go to market in 2015 for $800; visit their site for details.
