MEDICA 2014: AND THE WINNER IS…

Third Annual Mobile Application Competition at MEDICA

Thursday marked the 3rd installment of MEDICA’s medical mobile application competition. Ten finalists were chosen from fifty original entrants, who applied from countries all around the world. Each finalist was allowed three minutes to pitch their medical mobile apps to a panel of experts from the mobile health industry. The finalists were competing for an iPad and more importantly an entrance ticket to the next Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The competing applications represented a wide range of products, from an application that helps stroke patients communicate better with caregivers to a fitness app that is designed specifically to help sick and injured patients exercise more.

First prize went to Medopad Ltd. a UK-based initiative. The app permits doctors to access all patient data via an iPad or other mobile device. It acts like a single window into a hospital’s entire data infrastructure. According to the company, “the Medopad and proprietary mobile health operating system mHOS gathers existing patient data from hospital servers and sends them to the doctors fingertips.” Clinicians can access all a patient’s data through the Medopad system, they can search for and prioritize certain data and can also refer patients to other health professionals. Medopad launched the first wearable patient health record on Google Glass back in 2013.
