USING GOOGLE GLASS TO TRAIN SURGICAL RESIDENTS

Stanford Partners With CrowOptic To Train Surgical Residents With Google Glass

Stanford University Medical Center’s Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery has begun using Google Glass to train its surgical residents. Stanford has selected Glass app maker CrowdOptic as strategic partner in this new enterprise. This will allow surgeons to see what is happening from the residents perspective as they operate on patients. They will also be able to send visual feedback to the residents as they follow their progress.

In June, CrowdOptic joined with the University of California San Francisco, to see how the software performed when used in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Surgeons at the UCSF used the app to train residents and also to communicate with remote physicians. According to Dr. Thomas Vail, UCSF Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery there is a great future for this technology in medicine, “We see strong potential for technology to enhance the training of physicians who will benefit from live perspectives of views that have been to date restricted by the realities of modern day orthopedic surgery.”
