Soft Tissue Transponder Guides Clinicians Around Healthy Tissue During Radiation Therapy

Varian Medical Systems has received FDA approval for its Calypso Beacon transponder. The Beacon is a soft tissue transponder that provides continuous tumor position tracking during radiotherapy and radiosurgery procedures. It has already been cleared for use in the prostate and prostatic bed, and now will be approved for use in other soft tissue except the lungs. The transponder emits a non-ionizing RF signal that is tracked in real time by the Varian Calypso system and allows clinicians to make instantaneous objective decisions affecting patient treatment.
