WORLD’S FIRST 3D PRINTED EYE CELLS

Bioprinting’s latest ocular success

The first 3D printed eye cells were successfully created by researchers at Cambridge, and the potential implications this research carries are huge. Researchers used a piezoelectric inkjet printer to reproduce retinal cells of adult rats; the study demonstrated that the printing process does not produce adverse effects on the viability or survival rate of the cells in culture.

For researchers Professor Keith Martin and Dr Barbara Lorber, this success is just the beginning; their aim is develop the technology and apply it to retinal repair in humans, and may eventually aid in the cure for blindness.
