Small, lightweight and portable, the BrainPort is a balance correction device for the treatment of patients with chronic vestibulocerebellar disorders.

Balance Retraining Solution. It's proprietary technology generates precise information of the head via electrotactile stimulation of the tongue and helps patients gain control over their balance and posture. The balance retraining system comprises a batteryoperated control unit that is worn around the neck and an intra-oral device (IOD), which includes a tilt sensor and an electrode array.

The patient places the electrode array on the tip of the tongue. The tilt sensor detects head tilt when the patient leans forwards, backward or to either side. The information is then relayed by microprocessors directly to the tongue through the electrode array. For example, if the patient sways to the right, the signal on the tongue moves to the right. By adjusting their position so that the signal is maintained in the centre of the tongue, the patients can return to a centred balance posture.

Consistent use of the device, usually twice a day for about 20 minutes, leads to retention of improved balance control between treatment sessions. As a result, users experience reduced risk of falls and improved functional abilities.
