Hyperthyroidism in Cats

It is known that thyroxine plays an important role in the endocrine system.

Whether a thyroid gland secretes excess or deficient thyroid hormone can cause health problems.

This article focuses on the hyperthyroidism in cats. Hyperthyroidism is a disease and occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much of thyroid hormone. It is relatively common endocrine disorder in aged cats, especially between 7-8 years old.

The simultaneous detection of T4 and CHOL can help to diagnose whether the thyroid function is abnormal. Many cats that are diagnosed early can be treated successfully. However, when hyperthyroidism goes untreated, not only clinically significant weight loss but also serious complications generated. Therefore, it is recommended that middle-aged cats list T4 testing as a regular health check item.
