Case Study

Gastric Dilation in Rabbits

This case study is a collaborative article between ProtectLife and Jungle Exotic Animal Hospital. Special thanks to the Director Chung-Jui Chen and Yong-Chen Zheng, DVM for their assistance in completing a rich case study of gastric dilation in pet rabbits.

The article from Jungle Exotic Animal Hospital examines two cases of gastric dilation in rabbits, highlighting the challenges of diagnosing illness in these animals, as they often hide symptoms. In the first case, a 6-year-old female rabbit with gastric obstruction deteriorated despite treatment and surgery, leading to euthanasia. In the second case, a 16-month-old male rabbit with congenital knee dysplasia and gastric dilation underwent emergency surgery, eventually recovering despite complications.

This case study emphasizes that rabbits often exhibit nonspecific symptoms like lethargy and decreased appetite, which can mask serious health issues. Comprehensive diagnostics, including blood tests, are crucial for identifying underlying problems and preventing life-threatening conditions. Proactive monitoring and early intervention by veterinarians and owners are essential to improving outcomes for rabbits with gastrointestinal issues.
