Swiss defibrillator FRED easyport is delivered by drone and saves a life

Swiss medical technology company SCHILLER has made history. In December 2021, a patient suffering a cardiac arrest was saved by a defibrillator delivered by drone . The FRED easyport defibrillator is manufactured by SCHILLER in Baar, Switzerland.

Because of its small size and light weight, Everdrone has chosen the Swiss FRED easyport defibrillator for its drone flights. In collaboration with the Centre for Rescue Sciences at the Swedish Medical University "Karolinska Institutet", Everdrone has shown that when cardiac arrest is suspected, it is possible for drones to provide a FRED easyport AED before the emergency services arrive on the scene.

In many locations, it is difficult for emergency services to get to a patient quickly enough. Everdrone's airborne AED delivery service is an innovative way to solve this critical problem. As a pilot project, the service can currently reach 200,000 inhabitants in Sweden and is to be expanded to other locations in Europe in 2022. A 4-month study was carried out in 2020, the results of which were published in the Journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Autonomous drone with AED saves cardiac arrest patient

For the first time in medical history, a drone has now played a crucial role in saving a life during a sudden cardiac arrest. In December 2021, an autonomous Everdrone drone delivered a defibrillator that saved the life of a 71-year-old man in Trollhättan, Sweden.

A pioneering achievement with Swiss technology

"We are proud to have contributed to this pioneering achievement with our technology," says SCHILLER CEO Alfred Schiller. The portable defibrillator FRED easyport was developed in Baar ZG and has been manufactured at SCHILLER headquarters for almost 20 years. The device is unrivalled to this day in its small dimensions and light weight. Many doctors, high-risk patients, athletes, security personnel in personal protection, rescue services and police officers always have the pocket defibrillator with them. With transport via drone, the FRED easyport is now entering a new dimension.
