Introducing Kool Plate™ Cooling Tray

For chilling & preparing paraffin blocks

It is a well-known fact that paraffin blocks prepared from histology tissues have to cool for the microtome cutting to be efficient. Warm blocks just won't cut well. The cooling seems to help the different densities of the wax and the tissue to get closer to each other.

Typically, cooling plates are used to achieve this. The prepared blocks are placed on the cold surface cooled by a refrigeration system, a sort of mini-fridge, and after a few moments, the block is sufficiently cooled that the technician can make the thin slices that they are looking for.

Simport’s new Kool Plate™ is a small plate filled with a special gel that is prepared by cooling it in a freezer overnight. The next day, it provides the cold surface needed to cool the blocks in order for them to be cut. This unit is self-contained, does not require an electrical supply, and is surprisingly efficient! One of the very desirable characteristics of the Kool Plate™ is that the condensation that naturally forms is liquid, compared to the electric cooling plate that condenses in snow. This provides the microtomist with wet blocks, a characteristic that also helps in obtaining nice ribbons and thin sections. Ask around, you will see that this is true!

The Kool Plate™ new state-of-the-art gel performs better than previous similar units as it will maintain a surface temperature of lower than 4 C for a full 4 hours when frozen at -20C for 16 hours (overnight). It is large enough to accommodate 18 to 24 cassettes. A Styrofoam base is supplied with each pack of six plates to provide insulation and condensation collection.

Kool Plate™ is a truly inexpensive solution for a variety of environments; keep one as a backup in case the cold plate breaks or use it for any technique that requires cooling. Tissue pre-cooling for cryostat frozen sectioning is one of those applications where it performs extremely well! It is the ideal product for walk-in Moh’s clinics, small histology labs, vet labs CROs, lab technology teaching schools, and research institutes core histology facilities. Anybody that cannot afford expensive cold plates or want to avoid adding more noise in a busy lab will love this unit.
