Obesity is the main obstacle to the control of hypertension, which is the main risk factor for cardiovascular death. To determine the long-term effects of bariatric surgery on the control and remission of hypertension, researchers conducted a 5-year randomized clinical trial, which was published online in JACC (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2022 impact factor: 24.4) on February 5, 2024.
This study included patients with hypertension who had grade 1 or 2 obesity and were taking at least 2 antihypertensive drugs. Patients were assigned to gastric bypass surgery plus drug therapy or drug therapy.
The main outcome (target requirement) was evaluated after 5 years:
The dose of antihypertensive drugs was reduced by at least 30%; and blood pressure levels were maintained at <140/90 mmHg.
Gastric bypass surgery combined with drug therapy group Drug therapy group
Target achievement rate 80.7% 13.7%
BMI 28.01 36.40
Drug quantity reduction rate 80.7% 13.7%
Average number of antihypertensive drugs 0.80 2.97
The study concluded that bariatric surgery is an effective and long-lasting treatment for patients with obesity and hypertension.
