Diode Laser Treatment for Rapid Healing of a Fistulized Abscess in a Cat
Dr. Costa, at her clinic in Imola, Italy, is treating a 3-year-old male cat with the DG-8 VET diode laser by LUXYVET for a fistulized frontal abscess caused by an animal bite.
After cleaning the infected area, the cat is treated with laser therapy using decontamination and biostimulation protocols. The diode laser radiation effectively and immediately eliminates pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi), including antibiotic-resistant and methicillin-resistant strains, such as “Staphylococcus Aureus” and “Intermedius”, from the infected area. With the subsequent Biostimulation protocol, the diode laser light promotes essential biological effects, such as analgesic, anti-edemic, and anti-inflammatory actions, leading to rapid resolution of the condition.
These effects are enhanced by the interaction of the laser photons with the chromophores catalyzing oxidative phosphorylation within mitochondrial respiratory chains, accelerating ATP synthesis, the fuel necessary for all metabolic processes, including tissue repair. This is triggered by increased collagen and elastin production by fibroblasts and extracellular matrix molecules like Periostin, TGF-beta 1, BMP-2, and HSP70, catalyzing reepithelialization and healing without scarring in the damaged tissue.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Costa using her DG-8 VET diode laser from LUXYVET, set to the specific “Fistula” protocol. This protocol involves the use of a 300-micron fiber activated at 1 watt of power in continuous wave mode for 20 seconds, with 2 consecutive applications.
Dr. Costa decided to perform 3 decontamination applications due to the severity of the clinical condition. As seen in the first image, the fiber optic is inserted into the fistulized opening to reach the purulent abscess, which had created the fistula pathway due to pathogen colonization.
The clinician effectively decontaminates the purulent sac with the fiber optic in a retrograde motion (toward the channel's exit), ensuring complete eradication of the infected tissue with a single treatment. The second image shows the application of the Biostimulation protocol, using a non-activated 300-micron fiber, emitting at 0.5 watts in continuous wave mode for 10 seconds, with the pilot light on. The fiber optic is inserted into the fistulized opening to irradiate the inside of the fistula with an elliptical, retrograde motion. The videos will demonstrate the execution of both treatments.
The biological effect of biostimulation promotes conditions for rapid healing and tissue regeneration, as clearly observed in the image of the healed patient 2 days after treatment with the DG-8 VET. The therapeutic efficacy of the diode laser has resulted in a radical and immediate eradication of the pathogenic flora from the abscess, with rapid obliteration of the fistula. The follow-up image, taken 9 days after treatment, confirms the complete healing of the wound treated with DG-8 VET.
