Power over Ethernet has become common in manufacturing, automation, and security systems, and it is now working it's way into healthcare. PoE allows an Ethernet cable to carry both an Ethernet connection and electricity. This cuts down on costs associated with installing power cords and outlets throughout a facility. It also creates a cleaner, simpler cabling system.

With recent advancements, PoE cables can now carry up to 60W of power, enough to power some biomedical equipment. PoE is also used in patient beside terminals and patient check in kiosks, for the ease of installation and because PoE is a more reliable and cost effective source of power.
