What is Edge Computing?

Edge computing means processing the data close to where that data is actually collected.

In healthcare, an edge computer might be used at a nurses' station, to monitor multiple patients at once. Loads of patient data is sent to the nurses' computer, so the nurse can view patient vitals in real time. The edge computer is processing and filtering out most of that data. It is important that data is processed right there in the hospital, before it's sent to the cloud or a data center. Otherwise, there would be a massive amount of data being transferred to the cloud every second.

That’s edge computing: processing data close to where it is actually captured. In this case, the data is captured at the patient bedside.
