A Pakistani Pioneer Bringing Digital Safety to Blood Transfusion

A Homegrown Technology Setting New Standards in Safe Blood Transfusion

Pakistan has produced many outstanding medical professionals, and among them, Dr. Saba Jamal stands out for reshaping the country’s blood banking landscape. A graduate of Sindh Medical College with advanced training and triple board certifications from the United States, she returned to Pakistan determined to fix a long-standing problem: an unsafe and fragmented blood supply system heavily dependent on replacement donors.

While working in local settings, Dr. Saba repeatedly witnessed how human errors, poor documentation, and inconsistent practices could put patients at risk. She realized that to deliver safe blood across both urban and remote areas, Pakistan needed a standardized, digital system that could guide staff, catch mistakes instantly, and enforce compliance—even in high-pressure environments.

When international software searches failed to offer a solution focused on preventing human error, she decided to build one herself. With Indus Hospital & Health Network providing the platform but limited funds available, Dr. Saba personally financed the creation of a specialized software house, Zaavia. She gathered a team of blood bankers, analysts, and software engineers to design a system from scratch.

After years of development, the result was Panacea—a real-time digital surveillance and error-management system for blood banks. It flags mistakes the moment they occur, stops further processing until the issue is corrected, and alerts management automatically. The software embeds all regulatory requirements, runs without downtime, and supports consistent quality at every step.

Panacea has now been deployed at 22 sites of Indus Hospital & Health Network and won the international bid for Pakistan’s Safe Blood Transfusion Program, funded by KfW (Germany), expanding its use to 20 more sites across the country. Its impact has been significant: it helped Indus Hospital’s Karachi Blood Center become the first in Pakistan and the entire SAARC region to earn AABB accreditation—an American gold standard for blood safety. Several international facilities using Panacea have since achieved the same distinction.

Today, Zaavia has grown into a thriving software company serving clients in Pakistan and abroad, but Panacea remains its flagship achievement—driving a much-needed shift toward safer, standardized blood banking in the country.

Reflecting on the journey, Dr. Saba credits her team and expresses gratitude for being able to contribute to Pakistan’s healthcare system. Her commitment and leadership continue to inspire progress in an area where precision can quite literally save lives.
