SPONSORED ARTICLE. Mechanical Ventilation and Respirators. Powered by FAULHABER

In the current coronavirus pandemic, ventilator-assisted air has become a decisive factor in medical care.

Both in ventilators in clinical use for breathing support for severe patients and for use in protective equipment worn by laboratory and medical personnel, FAULHABER drives ensure reliable, simple and safe operations.

Drives for Ventilation Systems

Ventilators are currently in limited supply around the world, due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases; many countries are fighting to build up stock and increase their production capacities to meet the global demand. In the area of air flow control, medical technology manufacturers rely on drives from FAULHABER. The drive specialist offers a number of suitable drives for a wide range of mechanical ventilators.

The FAULHABER BRC series brushless DC motors are a suitable fit for medical technology applications. In optimized, continuous operation, the motors satisfy the requirements of ventilator applications by delivering high-performance bearing and cogging-free running with a linear speed and torque curve. The brushless motors with an integrated speed controller operate to provide precise speed control for any desired air flow rate. Thanks to their robust construction, they are also suitable for applications actuating high loads. The motors can be operated reversibly in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, depending on the required control mode.

Also well suited for mechanical ventilators are the high-precision, 16 mm, high-speed FAULHABER BHx series. The 2-pole brushless BHx series is based on an innovative and robust design and delivers high power in spite of its compact size. The BHx motors are offered in 2 distinct versions, each optimized to support a wide variety of application needs: the BHT variant is dedicated to high torque for large impulsive cycles, and the BHS version is focused on achieving very high speeds for continuous use.

The motors of the BHx series can drive variable loads with minimal speed fluctuations and ensure a smooth performance at constant speed. Furthermore, their low inertia and short response time provide high dynamic actuation. The BHx series is also characterized by and designed for low vibration and low noise, which helps to reduce fatigue and stress in the application environment, particularly for handheld instruments being used by medical staff. This provides a significant advantage, especially for applications requiring direct patient interaction.

Drives for Powered, Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR)

Respiratory protection systems that use a fan to draw air through the filter are better suited for the user than those with which the user must use his or her own lung power. The constant flow of air enables more natural and less fatiguing breathing. Drives for respirators, as part of personal protective equipment (PPE), must be both lightweight, compact, and powerful. Of the SR and S/G motor series families, FAULHABER offers a wide selection of coreless DC motors with a diameter of 22 mm. These are ideally suited for portable applications, as the precious-metal commutation and the non-ferrous rotor ensure a long battery life and high efficiency. The minimal rotor inertia of these FAULHABER motors enables highly dynamic control.

The new FAULHABER flat brushless dc BXT motor series is also ideal for use in powered respirators and medical ventilation. Thanks to an innovative winding technology and optimized, compact design, the BXT series offers high torque and high-efficiency, both of which significantly exceed market standards with regard to the ratio of torque to length, volume and weight.

The FAULHABER BRC series brushless DC motors are suitable for use in a wide range of medical and lab technology, including both ventilators and respirators. Ranging in diameter from 15 to 31 mm, they enable actuation in extremely confined spaces, which is especially important for mobile and battery-operated applications such as PAPR respiratory protection.
