Advanced Biomechanics Supporting Elite Karate Performance

A leap forward in performance enhancement and injury prevention

At STT Systems, we are proud to support sports performance through advanced motion capture technology. One of our latest success stories is the implementation of a state-of-the-art biomechanics lab at the Royal Spanish Karate Federation (RFEK). This project sets a new standard in analyzing and optimizing movement in high-level karate, offering unprecedented insights for athletes and coaches alike.

Innovative solutions for detailed biomechanical evaluation
Tailored to the demands of competitive karate, the installed system integrates 3D motion capture, inertial sensors, and high-speed video analysis, all synchronized through a unified software platform. This setup enables real-time visualization, kinematic analysis, and automatic report generation, with dedicated modules for KATA and KUMITE disciplines.

Core system components:

12 PRIME 13 cameras (240Hz, 1.3 Mpx, Ethernet): deliver high-resolution 3D motion capture.
2 high-speed color video cameras: provide synchronized visual footage.
Full-body inertial sensor system: captures additional kinematic and joint rotation data.
Integrated software suite: allows for real-time analysis and report generation

Karate-specific module: technical precision like never before
One of the highlights of this project is the karate-specific analysis module, which enables coaches to compare real athlete postures with ideal 3D models, detect technical flaws, and analyze biomechanical metrics such as joint angles and body balance with exceptional precision.

“For the first time, we can objectively explain and replicate why a technique is inefficient or why an athlete loses stability during a KATA transition. This is a game-changing tool for coaching,” said one of the RFEK’s technical staff.

This system goes beyond visual analysis: it allows coaches to measure, interpret, and enhance every aspect of athletic movement — from the acceleration of a punch to the postural control during a kick.

Tangible benefits for coaches and athletes
This advanced motion analysis system equips RFEK’s staff with objective, science-based insights to improve technique, prevent injuries, and maximize performance. Key benefits include:

High-accuracy movement playback with synchronized 3D scenes and high-speed video.
Precise identification of technical errors.
Measurement of speed, acceleration, and movement efficiency.
Improved balance and body alignment through inertial analysis.

A forward-looking investment
While currently used during specific training sessions, the RFEK is evaluating the progressive integration of this system into daily routines to extend its benefits across all competition levels, from junior athletes to elite professionals.

A new era in combat sports performance analysis
This successful collaboration with the RFEK proves that motion capture and biomechanical analysis technologies can profoundly transform training in sports like karate, where milliseconds and millimeters make a difference. Having these tools is essential to staying ahead in elite competition.

At STT Systems, we are committed to delivering innovative, data-driven solutions for sports performance, clinical analysis, and injury prevention. Whether you work with athletes, patients, or research subjects, we can help you build a custom biomechanics lab to meet your goals.

Still relying on video playback or subjective feedback to assess performance? It’s time to take the leap into objective, data-based training.
