What is Google Mobile Services (GMS) Certification?

GMS certification ensures that Google's suite of apps will run properly on a particular Android device.

Any manufacturer selling a device with Google Play must obtain GMS certification. Apps such as Google Chrome, YouTube and WhatsApp are found on the Google Play Store. However, because Android is an open source platform, many ODMs (Original Device Manufacturers) develop their own applications on the platform and may not need access to Google Play, and therefore may not need GMS certification.
